Get Your Kids to Read! A Proven System to Increase Quantity and Quality…Plus a FREE Printable Book Report Form

| |

Do you struggle to get your kids to read? Are you tired of dealing with the battle of it all? Perhaps, like me, you have a little avid reader but would like to encourage her to go deeper than the latest tween craze. In this post I share my proven system to not only motivate your kids to increase the quantity of their reading but the quality as well.

The battle is real my friends. Believe me, I know how you feel! I have a 5 (almost 6!) year old who is learning and an 8 and a half year old who is soaring. With Holden it can be a challenge just to get him to sit and focus. With Mikaela, I long to see her begin developing a personal walk with the Lord, one that is not simply based on my feeding her the Word but rather one that has deep roots going down into what she is personally storing up in her heart. (When life gets tough, our kids need their own faith to stand on.)

Below, you will find a video detailing the system I have developed to help motivate my kids to not only read, but to read more of what I’d like them to read. Some may call it bribery, and I’m okay with that!

I hope you will enjoy this. Take what you like, and leave the rest. Personalize it however you wish to make it work for you and your family to help get your kids to read. (Feel free to leave comments with your own ideas and tips!)

At the end of this post I have included a list* of some books I mention in the video to help get you started, as well as a place to request the PDF of the book report form I developed for Mikaela.

One final note: Don’t forget YOU ARE THE PARENT! There is a high probability that your kids won’t immediately jump at the thought of a regular reading plan, if for no other reason than that you came up with it. Kids are kids! But you are the parent here. And this is where the 10 minutes comes in handy. Set a timer, and tell them they can stop as soon as it dings. Don’t forget to give them a few options so they are choosing what to read rather than feeling forced. Getting started is the hardest part. Once they get rolling and begin reaping the rewards they may surprise you!

Happy Growing!
